Synopsis

Jail movie is based on the character Parag Dixit who is living a dream life with a great job and his loving girlfriend Maansi! However things take an ugly turn when after a series of unfortunate events the suddenly wakes up in jail; handcuffed and randomly beaten up by the cops.

Parag is perplexed and in a place far from his utopian life. He tries hard to face away from the ugly truth and wish it's all a bad dream but soon succumbs to the prison anarchy. The only salvation he finds is in Nawab, a convict and a warder who believes that Parag is innocent.

Soon, Parag discovers the inner mechanism and the science responsible for the wretched status inside the prison and hordes of broken hearts and shattered souls which managed to find comfort amidst the four prison walls. He is left with a choice, to either live a life that controlled and exploited or fight against the system!

Buzz up!Wake Up Sid, directed by debutante Ayan Mukerji, is like revisiting those years that lay at some remote corner of your mind, after you moved on in life.
Actually, Wake Up Sid is a slice of life film. It's not merely real in concept, but has also been told most realistically, so much so that you can't help but draw parallels with your life or with someone you know. But what really makes Wake Up Sid most believable is Ranbir Kapoor, who's mastered the craft at such a young age.

This one has no middle ground. You will either love Wake Up Sid or just hate it. A section of the viewers are likely to complain about the lack of a coherent plot and its leisurely pace. But on the flip side, that's exactly why Wake Up Sid works. Director Ayan Mukerji hasn't gone in for a lavish, exaggerated debut. Like Love Aaj Kal and Luck By Chance, restrained and subtle portrayal of emotions are its high point.

Sid Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) is not Aamir Khan of Dil Chahta Hai or Hrithik Roshan of Lakshya. They may have been rich and lazy. But both were essentially kind hearted, chilled-out guys.

Sid on the other hand has been depicted as an extremely arrogant and rude youngster. He shares an uncomfortable relationship with his parents. And while he is proud of his father's bank balance, Sid is equally embarrassed about working in his family's bathroom fittings business. It's elements like these, which distinguish the film from a regular urban comedy. In fact Wake Up Sid does not go in for an out-and-out humourous take on Ranbir's character. Coming of age is never an instant experience. It takes time, a sweet amount at that, before realisation hits. As if on cue, Wake Up Sid [ Images ] follows the tempo of its eponymous hero.

There's not much of a story to tell. It could be related in a five-minute music video -- about a boy who takes everything; family, education, comforts for granted and a slightly older, independent girl. What happens when the twain share the same roof?

And so the first quarter of writer/director Ayan Mukerji's fresh, romantic and feel-good caper about a boy-in-limbo's metamorphosis into a man-in-charge is leisurely paced, as if unapologetically echoing Sid's laidback temperament, an affable yet clueless college lad who snaps at his folks, doodles on his accounts text book to party hard at Ruby Tuesday, gaming arcades, shopping malls and discotheques with his two best friends a plump Betty-types (an instantly likeable Shikha Talsania) and a bearded sensitive Joe (Namit Das, half-amusing), driving a sleek Honda CRV, with an exceptionally trendy wardrobe of cartoon-themed tees (Joker, Dastardly, Beavis & Butthead, Ghostbusters, Tom & Jerry, Snoopy to name a few), cute 'n' colourful boxers and a room-filled with all sorts of fanboy toys, gadgets and gizmos.

Phew, right? All these cool props to emphasise on Sid's affluent, metropolitan, spoilt character are in excess, in fact to the point of distraction. Even so, most of the aforesaid is swiftly established in a lilting Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy number, Kya karoon.

Immediately after, the momentum tires down into scenes with either one too many ungainly pauses or dialogues (by Niranjan Iyengar) that tend to ramble on. Like Sid's tribute to Mumbai [ Images ] is characteristically a Mumbaikar showing off the awesomeness of his city to a visitor to the extent the other feels sorry he/she hails from anywhere else. But the verbosity with which he is asked to convey Mumbai's magical magnetism, monsoon madness and insomniac charm does not appeal. Wake Up Sid is the coming-of-age story of a slacker named Sid, played by Ranbir Kapoor. In a wonderfully done title sequence, debutant director Ayan Mukherji shows us Sid struggling with accounting the night before his final exam. He’s had four cups of coffee and stays up till 3 am but he doesn’t get past the first question.

Unfortunately the film doesn’t maintain this crackling momentum and becomes a patchy, predictable story held together by the sheer prowess of Ranbir. Ayan, working from his own story and screenplay, skillfully creates Sid’s state of arrested development.

This is the kind of collegiate who sleeps in Sponge Bob sheets, doesn’t last one week in his father’s bathroom furnishing business, which he describes as full-on pakao, and has no ambition or plans for the future apart from getting drunk. Sid meets Aeysha, played by Konkona Sen Sharma, a slightly older, more mature and focused girl, who moves to Mumbai from Kolkatta to create an independent life for herself.

The two, polar opposites, become friends though she’s quick to explain that he is not her type. She is looking for a man, not a boy. Eventually, Aeysha helps Sid grow up. He discovers that life is a little more complicated than the comic books he reads. Wake Up Sid has honesty and freshness. Ayan creates some genuinely tender and moving moments.

There is a lovely little scene in which Sid makes an impromptu cake for Aeysha’s birthday. And Sid’s confrontation with his parents packs a wallop. However, Ayan isn’t as successful at stringing together the moments.

The pacing in the first half is very slow. Towards interval, the film gathers an emotional momentum but afterward it becomes slack again. The bigger problem is that the crisis of the characters never feels sufficiently awful or urgent. read full review...

There, living with Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma), Sid is confronted by his harsh reality. He can’t cook for his life. He doesn’t have a job. His credit card expires. And on top of it all, he finds that he’s carried the disorder of his own life into Aisha’s. It’s time to wake up.

A simple story that touches your heart without overwhelming it with too much drama or emotions, ‘Wake Up Sid’ is the face of new-age Bollywood cinema that has already given us gems like Dil Chahta Hai and Rock On. Debutant director Ayan Mukherjee deserves a solid pat on his back for putting together a gripping and relatable film about a confused youth’s coming of age. The juvenile quirks and emotional dilemmas of the eponymous hero are depicted with subtlety that’s scarce in Bollywood.

Since when did young kids begin talking like the wise old grandpas? Well, the child in Vaada Raha... I Promise wisecracks with such insight that might leave the lungi-clad pseudo gurus on bhakti channels scampering for cover.
Jokes apart, ‘Vaada Raha’ is about hope, hope that a young kid gives to a man who’s lost the will to live. Dr. Duke Chawla (Bobby Deol) lives an ideal life. He’s got a beautiful girlfriend (Kangana Ranaut); he’s been honoured for his unique research on cancer; he’s got a loyal set of friends and other things (including a dog) that make his life perfect. But one accident turns his life topsy-turvy.
Duke is paralyzed and his girlfriend dumps him the first thing. Devastated and having lost the desire to live, the hospitalized Duke refuses to eat or take his medicines. And then, a kid (Dwij Yadav) enters his life like a little angel. At first the sulky and brooding Duke spurns the kid’s advances. Vaada Raha, directed by Samir Karnik is a cheesy, emotionally manipulative, sob-saga that doesn't even deserve a straight-to-television release.

Bobby Deol plays genius surgeon Duke Chawla, who becomes paralysed neck down in a road accident, and is subsequently dumped by his fiancée (played by Kangana Ranaut), for a reason so bizarre, you have to see it to believe it. Languishing in a hospital, angry and overcome with despair, he at first rejects the overtures of friendly kid Roshan (played by Dwij Yadav), the resident smart-alec in the place. The little tyke, however, wins our hero's affections and motivates him to recover speedily, even as the boy succumbs to his own fatal condition eventually, which he's always kept hidden from Duke.

Sickeningly sentimental, Vaada Raha is full of logical loopholes and is directed with a loose hand by Karnik, who gives us some of the most ridiculous scenes you can think of, including one in which Duke tries to end his life by chewing his IV tubes, and another one in which he supervises a heart surgery from his hospital bed.

The film is packed with silly stereotypes like faithful dog who won't eat till his master does, cheery hospital staff straight out of a Sooraj Barjatya film, and happy patients who don't seem to ever want to leave the hospital at all. read full review...

Vaada Raha... I Promise' has certainly come into being because someone owed someone else a big favor, since even the lousiest of film personalities would have thrown the script into the trash can.

It is quite evident that stars Bobby Deol and Kangana Ranaut did not read the script before signing on this movie. And it looks like the producers were deliberately rubbing the salt in by naming the film 'Vaada Raha... I Promise'. Director Samir Karnik doesn't learn from his mistakes after the debacles of 'Kyun...! Ho Gaya Na', 'Nanhe Jaisalmer: A Dream Come True ' and last year's 'Heroes'.

Coming to the story, Bobby Deol plays Duke Chawla, a successful Doctor who is to be hitched to Nalini (Kangana Ranaut). Right before they get married, Duke meets with an accident and is left paralysed from the neck down. And just when he thinks Nalini's love and affection will nurse him back to health, the lady drops him like a hot plate, leaving him distraught and enveloped in hopelessness. In the hospital Duke befriends a lively little kid named Roshan (Dwij Yadav) who is suffering from terminal illness. The rest of the film follows Roshan and Duke's bonding, and how the boy provides motivation and hope as Duke forgets his own grief.read full review...

The second best thing is that while Kangana Ranaut may not have had botox injected into her thin lips, she may have attempted a silicon filling. The worst thing about director Samir Karnik's final film of a trilogy (Nanhe Jaisalmer, Heroes) is its utterly pointless EQ.

We have heard the story a zillion times. Leading doctor (Bobby Deol) meets with a near-fatal accident that leaves him both bed-ridden as well as intellectually stunted. His explains his predicament to a friend: "Tu nahin samjhega. Is umar mein bed par toilet." Of course his girlfriend (Kangana) leaves him because, "I know he's a proud man and I'd rather break his heart now than make him feel indebted to me forever."

So the poor doctor, angry with life and unable to do much about it, screams, shouts and brings the hospital down with his obnoxious behaviour. Enter Roshan (Dwij Yadav), the sickeningly sweet and irritatingly cocky kid in the next room who takes it upon himself to give the doctor the only thing he really needs -- hope. For those still not tired of films about gun-toting goons, tobacco-chewing gangsters, power-hungry politicians, humourless encounter specialists and, most importantly, corrupt cops, here’s another addition to the genre - Baabarr.

The film begins as the journey of a young boy into the crime-infested world of a small town in Uttar Pradesh but soon becomes a gore-fest as the dead bodies pile up faster than you can keep the count. Director Ashuu Trikha attempts to jolt a viewer repeatedly with the blood-curdling depiction of violence, but that’s not what necessarily makes a good crime thriller.

When a boy commits his first murder at the age of 12, you can very well imagine what he will grow up to be - an extortionist and a killer. Gangster movies - this genre has been done to death. Films like PARINDA [Vidhu Vinod Chopra] and SATYA [Ramgopal Varma] stand tall on this list. But, of late, the genre has taken a backseat since people aren't too keen on watching bloodshed and the same old saga of an innocent taking to the world of crime.

BAABARR belongs to the same genre, yet is an exception. It shows how people, even kids, live by the gun and die by the gun. It tells you that crime never ends, it only changes faces. It tells of the wicked nexus between cops-politicians-gangsters and the deterioration of the law and order machinery. Also, this one's not Mumbai-centric, but is set in Uttar Pradesh.

BAABARR isn't just bloodshed, but at the same time, isn't for the faint-hearted either. There's violence galore, in fact several sequences are brutal, and chances are a section of the movie-going audience [read families/ladies] might shy away from this experience. read full review...

This week's release Baabarr starring Mithun Chakraborty, Om Puri, Urvashi Sharma, Sushant Singh and Sohum clearly draws its inspiration from the cult classic Satya. In fact there is even a scene where the lead character's wife is shown to be watching and crying over the death of Ram Gopal Varma's hero on screen.

Unlike in the case of Satya for whom even you might have shed a tear, the hero of this film - Baabarr evokes little or no sympathy.

Baabarr tells the story of its eponymous hero's rise in the world of crime and the eventual downfall. Bringing about this is an SP Dwivedi (played by Mithun Chakraborty) who will go to any extent except break the law to get the dreaded gangster down to his knees.

Dwivedi's task is an almost impossible one since Baabarr is close to some very powerful politicians and also has on his side a corrupt cop called Chaturwedi (Om Puri) who is much more than what meets the eye.read full review...

In the badlands of Uttar Pradesh, death can also come for the flimsiest of reasons. Even a row over a gilli-danda game can spiral into a murder as it happens for Baabarr Qureshi. And the event can just be a great career move in extortion and contract killings. That's how the life of Baabarr and his band of brothers unfurls.

With exceptions like the vastly under-feted Sehar (2005), not many films have journeyed into the bowels of the murky crime world of Uttar Pradesh. But right from the paan-stained walls, the charpois, the milky tea, the abattoirs with those scary butcher's knives, the claustrophic bylanes, cheek-by-jowl rooftops with flying kites -- Amanganj is rich in details. We get the feeling of watching something raw and real.

But, more than that, director Trikha (Alag, Deewanapan) and writer Ikram Akhtar also provide a feel of the ethos, the motivations, the values and attitudes of places like Amanganj where criminals become demi-gods. A small boy serving tea imitates the superstar criminal Baabaar's mannerisms and says, "Hum unke liye jaan bhi de sakte hain." The dialogues (Akhtar and Vivek Mishra) flavoured with Urdu words are again spot-on. And using a young boy's voice-over as a sutradhar is a neat little idea that works fine.

If Baabarr - why is everybody into numerology? - fails to create a firm impression, it's because director Trikha gets only the mood right, not the scenes. The killings of the rich businessman, the small-time contractor are shoddily constructed, almost amateurish. On occasions, the movie becomes a series of repetitive violent scenes even though the chase sequences, especially where Baabarr chases his rival Tabrez (an impressive Sushant Singh), are neatly executed. And, one wonders, whether the final twists in the tale are only for shock value, or they flow out of the narrative. read full review...

Deepak Tijori’s supposed suspense-thriller comes from the old school of filmmaking where the first hour is exhausted only on character introductions, lousy love stories, redundant songs and an interval point where you realize that you had actually come to watch a who-dun-it?

Arjun Kapoor (Arjun Rampal) is a criminal lawyer having a repute of acquitting the worst of convicts. As realization strikes one fine day, Arjun, seized by guilt pangs, quits his profession and retires to Goa. There he makes friends with an old man who hands him a manuscript which he wishes to get published but before that passes away. Arjun gets the book published to his credit and incidentally it becomes the bestseller.

The same book gets him into trouble when inspector Yashwant Deshmukh (Sunny Deol) arrests him on charges that the novel isn’t fictional but mentions factual murders which Arjun is held responsible for. Now Arjun has to prove himself innocent. read full review...

‘Fox’ has an interesting premise. It is about a lawyer who has been busy for years using law to save criminals. And then one day his conscience comes knocking and he goes backpacking to Goa for a break. But things go wrong when he gets framed for murder and the lawyer is to figure out things for himself. All stage is set for an intriguing chase and a thrilling story. However, ‘Fox’ fails.

It fails because of the eternal problem with suspense thrillers – the film is slow and the suspense unfolds without any thrills. It does not even surprise you one bit. ‘Fox’ is just not written well. While the pace is slow, the dialogues hardly interest you. There are too many loose ends and characters remain unexplained. Udita Goswami’s character and her romantic alliance is a bigger mystery than the actually mystery. Sagarika Ghatge hardly has anything to do and ends up playing a rather shallow character. Also, newcomer Vipul Gupte gets a raw deal. Even in terms of their performance, there’s nothing to write home about.

Another annoying part about ‘Fox’ is its camera work. Too many hand held shots, intended to give a shaky feel, actually give you a headache and do away with all your attention on the scene.read full review...

The story revolves around a young, successful criminal lawyer, Arjun Kapoor whose knowledge and aggressive interpretation of the law makes him a name to reckon with. 4.BUZZ 18 by Anand Vaishanav

Deepak Tijori thankfully refrains from any sleaze in his new film Fox. The thriller is about a sharp but corrupt criminal lawyer Arjun (Rampal) who makes a career out of defending bad guys. A conscience attack makes him re prioritise his life and Arjun decides to take a break. During his vacation, he lands upon a dead lawyer’s manuscript. Arjun releases the copy in his own name and the manuscript turns into an overnight bestseller. Trouble begins when a cop (Sunny Deol) frames Arjun for murder, based on clues in the manuscript. Arjun of course has to prove his innocence against a manuscript that doesn’t even belong to him.

Fox picks up an interesting but deliberately confusing subject. Deepak Tijori weaves in too many characters and forced twists to keep the audience puzzled. Unfortunately his execution lacks bite. Most of the sequences flow in a lethargic manner. After a fast paced start, the movie slips into a long love triangle. Sunny’s impressive entry at the interval point increases expectations. But none of mystery elements add up to a truly gripping climax.

What makes Fox marginally engaging is Arjun Rampal and Sagarika Ghtage's chemistry. The two somehow manage to rise above the dull proceedings. Rampal is enjoying acting these days so even his wooden expressions actually work. Ghatge deserved a better dubbing artiste, but has a pleasing screen presence. All she needs is truly glamorous role in a lavish film. Udita Gowswami provides some of the oomph factor. However her role adds no meat to the subject. Deol tries hard to rise above a sketchy character and is saddled with mundane dialogues. read full review...

5. OneIndia by Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama
Making a suspense thriller is tough. To keep the audience attentive, besides keeping the viewer guessing till the end, requires complete understanding of the craft. Deepak Tijori had attempted a suspense thriller earlier [most storytellers have a penchant for this genre] and Fox, a complex theme, is more of a challenge for him. So, does Tijori get it right? Initially, yes. But Tijori loses it all towards the post-interval portions. The culmination is the thorn in the flesh.

Strangely, most film-makers in Bollywood just don't give a proper conclusion to suspense thrillers
. The wrap up is just not compelling, with most films running out of steam in the final leg. Fox falls in this category. Verdict? This fox lacks the bite!

Jai and Meera are a very today couple. They noodle around in London, figuring out if they are, like, together. That entails mugs of black coffee and lots of smart chatter, and eventually, a parting of ways, because they can’t quite get a handle on their feelings. Like, love, you know, who knows?
Veer and Harleen take us back to the 60s. He follows her rickshaw on his cycle in Purani Dilli, and she takes note of her smitten Sikh suitor with downcast eye and demure smile. She’s a ‘soni kudi’, he’s a ‘changa munda’, and there is nary a doubt in their hearts that they are meant for each other.
Imtiaz Ali’s new film shuttles between the two time zones, ‘aaj’ and `kal’, and his twin-set of lovers, as they ricochet between cities and conviction. We get good-looking locations in London, Delhi, Calcutta, San Francisco, and exceedingly good-looking people. We get zippy backchat (I’m not trying to pile on, says Jai; then why pile on, shoots back Meera). We get some really nice moments. What we don’t, is a crackling romance. read full review...

Like Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met, Imtiaz Ali's third film also rests on a wafer-thin plot. The director uses smart one-liners and life-like situations to take the story forward. Love Aaj Kal is about Jai (Saif Ali Khan) an urban, alpha male who can't understand the meaning of love. His girl friend Meera (Deepika Padukone) also believes in choosing career over romance. Come to think of it, if the film carries the 'burden' of humungous expectations, it's imperative that it goes beyond those expectations. The reaction after watching the film has to be similar to a child who has laid his hands on his fav toy. The joyous smile would say it all. The question is, does Love Aaj Kal live up to the hype and hoopla surrounding it? Or does it go beyond that?
Buzz up!Love Aaj Kal is not an easy film to write and execute. Sure, it's a love story, but it's not one of those mundane love stories that talks of love and heartache. Here, the two stories, set in different eras, run parallel, but have a similar end.
To be brutally honest, it takes time to grasp the plot, since the past and present run concurrently. If you aren't attentive, chances are you'd lose the plot. Also, if you aren't aware by now that Saif enacts dual roles in the film -- playing his part as also the part of young Rishi Kapoor -- the goings-on would confuse you no end, when the transition occurs.
Love Aaj Kal is a director's show entirely. The relationships here are complex because the couple in love lives in complete denial. It is to Imtiaz Ali's credit that he has penned an offbeat story, developed a complex but comprehensive screenplay and extracted sensitive performances from the principal cast. At the same time, the writing isn't the type that would appeal to all sections of movie-going audience. Besides, the execution of the subject and also the pacing in the first hour are deterrents.
Final word? Love Aaj Kal makes you fall in love with love all over again. Makes you value your loved ones all the more. This film is special!...read full review....

Love is rarely a prosaic thing in our movies. Either sacrosanct or scandalous, innocent or impetuous, tragic or wicked, it can never be as banal as it can be real life. Love that we imagine love to be—that’s what great romantic films play on, and that’s why great romantic films are comfort films (like comfort food). Since his first film Socha naa Tha (2005), writer-director Imtiaz Ali has used that time-tested tool effectively and stylishly. Ali’s new film Love Aaj Kal is no different. There’s boy, there’s girl, there’s love, hurdles, heartbreak and happy ending—not much else. But unlike in Socha naa Tha and Jab we Met (2007), there’s some deliberate verbal discourse on love here. Ali believes that in the good old days, say in the 1960s, love was a thing of the heart. It still is, except he thinks today’s youth are cynical fools who believe that love can be conquered by reason. Quite a shaky premise to begin with, but a premise never made a good film.

In this sense, Love Aaj Kal is Woody Allenseque in parts. There are some long dialectics on the true nature of love between two men separated by generations, reminiscent of Woody pontificating in films such as Annie Hall. Ali, of course, is rooted to where his audience is, and is true to his own Bollywood sensibility. He makes the love-for-the-sake-of-love side of the argument win hands down. What is it with Bollywood and adventure? Why can’t we do thrillers in which our hearts leap into our mouths, and stay there? ‘Luck’, which is based entirely on the premise of it brimming over with edge-of-the-seat action, tips us over a couple of times-- at best. The rest is spent building up to a climax which isn’t.

Ram (Imran) is an average Joe who needs a lot of money. So does Ayesha (Shruti), and Major (Mithun), and Shortcut (Chitrashi). Along comes Big Betting Man Musa (Sanjay) and his right-hand man (Danny), who gather up this cash-strapped lot and transport them to South Africa, where they play on their luck, for their lives.

Bounty-hunting humans in the movies can be frightening and appalling, all at the same time. But Shah, who did ‘Kaal’ before this, treats Musa’s shenanigans as benign betting, and that colours the improbable proceedings: we settle back, knowing that the lead actors will find that elusive parachute or escape that toothy shark. Reality televisioncomes to big screen but the fear factor is that it's too pretentious. So in the same South African city where Akshay Kumar played host to daredevil girls, Sanjay Dutt challenges an eclectic group to perform stunts for his betting business. Predictably you also know their order of elimination with the junior artists getting knocked-off first and subsequently the hero (Imran Khan) surviving over the villain (Ravi Kishen). Ironically, while reality shows are unnecessarily scripted, films which need a tight script are loosely written.

The first half of the film is merely devoted to character introductions though none are convincingly established. For the zillionth time, Sanjay Dutt repeats his gun-toting act, moving around in sherwani, jackets and a French beard in the company of black-suited bodyguards. What more, even his name isn't any different - Musa. Ram Mehra (Imran Khan) has to repay the 20 crores that his late father had lost in stock market. Retired Major Jawar Pratap Singh (Mithun Chakravarthy) has the same conflict that Amitabh Bachchan had in Kaante - needs money for his ailing wife. For the neighbouring country connection, the script takes a Shortcut (Chitrashi Rawat). The best is yet to come! Now here's the thing about action films. Most of them aren't particularly smart, but you're willing to overlook that if they make for a dramatic and thrilling experience. The problem with Luck, which opens at cinemas this weekend, is that it's neither smart nor spectacular.

Sanjay Dutt stars as Musa, a gambling kingpin who's made a fortune in human betting. His faithful henchman Tamang (played by Danny Denzongpa) is entrusted the job of travelling the world and recruiting the luckiest people he can find to participate in a Fear Factor-style series of dangerous challenges, while loaded gamblers place bets on them.

Lured by the promise of a fat cash prize to the one who survives all challenges, a motley bunch of misfits – including Imran Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Ravi Kissen, Shruti Haasan, Chitrashi Rawat, and a handful of your staple foreign extras from Colaba Causeway – volunteer to jump off helicopters and enter shark-infested waters.

Borrowing his premise and key scenes quite liberally from a handful of films including Spanish thriller Intacto, French cult-favorite 13 Tzameti and Hollywood B-movie The Condemned, writer-director Soham Shah delivers a mangled mess of a picture that fails to engage because the characters are all stereotypes and you really couldn't care less if they lost their lives in those dangerous stunts.... read full review..

Mumbai: Director Soham Shah's multi-starrer action thriller is a feast for moviegoers, who love daring stunts. It is one of the best action thrillers of Bollywood. People who love action thriller should not miss it.

The story is based on a betting syndicate run by mafia king pin
Kareem Musa (Sanjay Dutt). Kareem Musa takes the game of betting to highest level by involving humans as betting objects.

Musa's aide Tamang (DannyDengonzapa) selects 20 participants from across the globe and assembles them in South Africa for the daring game. The participants have a proven record of extreme luck.

Betters put their money on the participants through Musa. The film starts with a new season. The participants are Ram (Imran Khan), who is a working professional and wants to earn huge money to compensate his father's fraud, Ayesha (Shruti Hassan), Retd. Col Singh (Mithun Chakravorty), who needs money for his wife's operation, Shortcut (Chitrashi) and Raghav (Ravi Kissen), who plays the role of a serial murderer.

1. INDIATIMES MOVIES by Gaurav Malani
There is no short cut to success is what this film intends to convey taking a very long route. Sadly, at the very outset, producer Anil Kapoor attempts to take a shortcut by choosing to (officially) remake a Malayalam film Udayananu Tharam (Mohanlal, Sreenivasan) which in turn is a (unofficial) spin-off on the Hollywood flick Bowfinger (Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy).

The film is Indianized with an additional sub-plot of how a non-actor (Arshad Warsi) turns an overnight superstar by stealing the script of an assistant director (Akshaye Khanna). Ironical that a film that centers on stealing of a script is itself a take-off of another film!

More irony unveils as the film goes on to highlight the significance of terms like script, storyboard, Stanislavsky and world cinema in filmmaking while actually giving no regards to any, indulging in self-mockery. Akshaye Khanna’s writer’s block appears more as if he’s stuck up in solving some math numerical. Every time he gets an ending to his story, he screams out saying ‘I got my climax’, which sounds suggestive with cheesy connotations.

The derived screenplay is patchy and its shows as writer Neeraj Vora struggles to script weak characters and weaker conflicts. Picture this – the assistant director gets married to superstar Mansi (Amrita Rao) and his chawl neighbours gift him a palatial flat. The graph goes flat as the story turns towards matrimonial disharmony with Mansi soon giving up on her chauvinistic husband. ..read full review

I didnt have great expectations from Short Kut since I knew first hand and StarBoxOffice was the first to break the story about how it is a rip-off of the Hollywood film Bowfinger. Worse, when you dread watching a film you know will be lame, its intolerable cruelty. This Short Kut will only take you downhill with its canned laughs. Why did Anil Kapoor produce such a film? What did he see in it? Did he think they were making a Bowfinger equal?

Akshaye Khanna plays Shekhar, a talented AD turned script-writer-director. Arshad Warsi plays Raju aka Rajesh Kumar, a much-hated and feared wannabe who takes short cuts to success. Tiku Talsania is Mr. Tolani, a producer, Amrita Rao is superstar Mansi in love with Shekhar. Raju steals Shekhar's script and stars in a film based on it. Chunky Pandey plays Kapoor, Raju's manager The film is a hit and he becomes a star. Shekhar is devastated but decides to take his revenge. He also marries Mansi and becomes Mr.Mansi, a tag he cannot live with. So Mansi leaves him. A twist of events causes Shekhar to make a movie with Raju.

Here are a few things that irked me during the movie:

Shekhar says, "Main tumhare bina adhoora hu" to which Mansi replies, "Mein tumhari ho gayi jab tumne mujhe pukara". It translates to "You complete me" and "You had me at hello", made famous by Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger in Jerry Maguire. Obviously in ShortKut it doesn't have the same tear jerking impact that it had in Jerry Maguire. Whatever happened to originality?...read full review

Jobless, hopeless actor Raju steals a superb script from sincere, hardworking writer Shekhar. A film is made. Raju turns into a superstar, Shekhar, a whingeing loser.

Shortkut suffers from director Neeraj Vora's customary inability to infuse any newness or subtlety into a plot that could easily have gone the other way. It covers roughly the same ground as Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance, minus its craft and skill. Everything is loud and plastic, and the actors all chant their lines at the top of their voices. Akshaye inhabits the same grid as he always has. Love interest Amrita Rao matches him, her unlimited cleavage not making up for limited range. And Arshad is the biggest disappointment, the highlight of his act being a crotch joke, when a champagne cork hits him in the nuts.

He's been doing a string of low-budget horrors in which he's been the best thing. Here he has no excuse Â— this is a big-budget, big banner film, with a fully-fleshed out role. Arshad Warsi, fine actor, RIP?.. read full review

Shortkut starring Akshaye Khanna, Arshad Warsi and Amrita Rao is not what I’d call a bad film. But it is, most certainly a pointless one. It’s got a standard storyline and no surprises in its telling.

Akshaye Khanna plays an assistant director in the Mumbai film industry who’s just finished writing a script he wants to direct himself. His struggling actor roommate, Arshad Warsi steals the script and hands it over to a producer who promptly agrees to make the film and to cast Arshad in the lead.

So while Akshaye’s dreams of becoming a successful filmmaker are shattered, Arshad turns into an overnight superstar.

Over the course of two hours and fifteen minutes, director Neeraj Vora drives home the point that there are no shortcuts in life, only sincerity and hard work ultimately pays.

Problem is, the film’s so lifeless and boring, you find yourself searching for a shortcut in the cinema that could instantly take you back to the comfort of your home. .. read full review

How much you enjoy Kambakkht Ishq is directly proportionate to just how low your standards have fallen. This battle-of-the-sexes saga starring Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor is a loud, vulgar and seriously offensive film that has reportedly been made at a price of Rs 60 crore. In that much money, you could feed an entire starving nation. And you'd be blessed for it.

I'm not saying the makers of Kambakkht Ishq have no business spending so much money. I'm just saying, if you must spend Rs 60 crore, the least you can do is give us a good film.

Akshay Kumar plays Viraj Shergill, a Hollywood stuntman who beds a new broad every day but loves his bachelor lifestyle too much to settle for anything permanent. He meets his match in Kareena Kapoor who plays Simrita Rai, a medical student-cum-part-time model who hates the very sight of men, convinced they're only interested in women for sex. The two of them clash when their respective best friends decide to tie the knot, but things take an unexpected turn when - believe it or not - Simrita accidently loses her musical watch inside Viraj's body while performing a surgery on him. Mortified that she could be sued for her negligence, she must find a way to get him back on the operation table so she can retrieve the watch. ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ aims at those who think from the groin, and hits the target unerringly: the hero and heroine of this heavily-publicised enterprise are eloquence personified--- he is a dog, she is a bitch. And like best of the breed, they circle, ears pricked, tails raised, throats growling, noses sniffing, all ends up, down, and the middle.

For the record, he’s Viraj Sheirgill (Akshay), ace stuntman in Hollywood, who believes women are good for only “two things”.

She is Simrita Rai ( Kareena), an ultra-swish model, who is convinced men want only one thing. Uh oh, actually, no, she is a surgeon, who bares her pretties only to pay her way through med school. Sometime back in 2007 it seemed all studio bosses set themselves a singular goal – Get Akshay Kumar on board. Pay him the moon and block a few months of his life in the form of bulk dates. Did anyone say script? Well, who cares! After all they have the biggest star in town. A good-looking heroine, foreign locales, slick music videos and few SMS gags would take care the rest.

Kambakkht Ishq is just about everything you expect in an Akshay Kumar film. So there is no point complaining about the lack of logic, silly situations and sexist humour. Akshay never promised to surprise you. But what one expects from Kambakkht Ishq is non-stop fun. Damn the sensibilities, as long as the jokes crack you up. Sadly Kambakhht Ishq runs out of steam in the humour department.

With the peppy promos playing on air for over three months, by now everyone is pretty aware about the plot. The battle of sexes in the first half is fast paced and genuinely funny in parts. And many of the sometimes-corny, one-liners work solely due to Akshay and Kareena's timing. Trouble starts in the last hour when the director subjects us to emotional atyachar. The movie revisits every done to death cliché of a love story to finally bring the couple together. A movie that's so irreverent about commitment takes an almost forced about turn. Filmmaking standards in Bollywood seem to have gone really high. Producers now opt for Sylvester Stallone over Sunny Deol for that mandatory special appearance in the climax as the messiah who saves the heroine from hoodlums. The shady second female fiddle who the heroine keeps abusing through the film has upgraded from Rakhi Sawant to Denise Richards. If that indirect insult to Hollywood still seems indicative, there is much more hardcore swearing in store.

The heroine and hero refer to each other as ‘dog’ and ‘bitch’ throughout. She adds that men have no IQ. Director Sabbir Khan either believes the same for his audience or is the species of men that the heroine is referring to. That’s because he treats the film with such childish cheekiness that you are amazed by the audacity with which the film offends the idea of entertainment.

Viraj (Akshay Kumar), an Indian stuntman working in Hollywood, is a compulsive womanizer who goes flirting around with every other woman in the town. Hey Baby, doesn’t that Akki sound familiar? For one good hour he goes on flirting outrageously with Simrita (Kareena Kapoor), a supermodel who is more of a mannequin with a disgusted face. The battle of sexes works adversely on your reflexes amidst jarring songs, commotional cake-fights, loud performances and toilet humour.

Miss Supermodel doubles up as a surgeon who, in an operation, leaves a timepiece inside stuntman’s stomach. With a story straight out of sensational tabloids, you helplessly watch the film ticking towards imminent disaster....read full review

5. ApunKaChoice By Naresh Kumar Deoshi

Not another dumb comedy from a man whose mere gummy grin and goofiness can leave you crackling with laughter! Akshay the repetitive Kumar, the winning stallion on whom Bollywood producers with bulgy wallets love to bet, is failed yet again by a raggedy script stitched with juvenile humour, sleazy dialogues and painfully kitschy melodrama.

The movie could be a litmus test for your LQ (laughter quotient). Sample this – the hero is detained at an airport for suspected possession of drugs. He’s taken to an interrogation room where an oversized black female smacks him face down on the table, pulls his pants down, puts on a glove on her hand, and looks for ‘hidden drugs’ in the hole that’s not hard to guess. Find that funny? Here’s more! Akshay’s sidekick Vindoo Dara Singh gulps down a protein shake mixed with Viagra and, his hormones stirred, begins to see the females at a wedding party in bras and bikinis. Not that funny? Check this out. The wedding party turns into a bash fest, with the guests punching, kicking (sometimes at objectionable places) each other and even farting. Cakes fly and land on the faces of the bride and the groom’s bro.
if you have stomach for this kind of humour, a visit to the theatre playing Kambakkht Ishq might leave you with an upset tummy, definitely not because of laughter. ...read full review

New York opens around 7 years after the 9/11 attacks with Omar (Neil Mukesh) being wrongly held captive by the FBI. Investigating officer Roshan (Irrfan Khan) offers to go easy on Omar if he agrees to spy on old-time friend Sameer (John Abraham) who the FBI suspects to be a terrorist. With a maneuvered reunion, Omar gets entry into Sameer's house and tries hard to unveil his activist identity but fails every time, much to his relief.

In contrast, Sameer himself narrates his distressing past to Omar of how he was illegally detained and brutally tortured by the FBI for 9 months, immediately after 9/11 and victimized for being a Muslim suspect in New York.New York opens on an intriguing note with Omar's attempts to infiltrate into Sameer's life. The ensuing chemistry between the characters keeps you riveted till the movie takes an interesting (though palpable) twist at the interval point. The terrorism theme comes into picture predominantly in the second half. The new smart catch-phrase in post-Obama America is post-racial. Which, to those who’ve suffered slurs in the name of race, is pure bunkum. On the same lines, Prez O’s talk of closing down of Guantanamo Bay is a great gesture, but it will take years before the world forgets why that penitentiary was stuffed with suspected terrorists.
Kabir Khan’s ‘New York’ is about three friends impacted by the fallout of 9/11: it was not just the twin towers which were destroyed; a whole way of life died too. Americans began looking at people not of their nationality and religion with hatred and deep suspicion: if they are brown and worshipped Allah, they were terrorists.

Sam aka Samir (John), Omar (Mukesh), and Maya (Katrina) meet as students at New York State U. They hang out on campus, in pubs, but never seem to go to class: just shows that even New Gen directors are reluctant to show heroes getting an education.

In the best Bollywood tradition, this is a triangle: Omar loves Maya who loves Sam. They watch the planes crash into the towers in shock and horror—Omar goes his way, the other two get hitched. Years later, the FBI in the shape of Roshan (Irrfan) surfaces in the threesome’s lives, with a shocking revelation: one of them is the kingpin of a sleeper terrorist organization, and the other has to turn into an FBI informer. Khan’s subject feels a little old (there’s been a ton of 9/11 related stuff in the last eight years, including Naseerudin’s debut 2006 feature ‘Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota’ ), but it is still relevant. read full review...

Director Kabir Khan's New York, based on extensive research conducted by the filmmaker himself, brazenly accuses the FBI of illegally detaining hundreds of Muslims suspected to have terrorist links post 9/11 and of putting them through extreme forms of torture, only to release months later when no evidence against them could be gathered that many of them were innocent.

Surprising then, that the same film's basic premise involves the FBI itself waiting and watching and monitoring – but never arresting or even probing – a very serious terror suspect who they have ample dope on. It's not until he's planted bombs all across the FBI headquarters that they swing into action.

In another instance, a lady who works as a human rights activist, merrily goes about her life knowing full well her husband's involved in terrorist activities, but doesn't confront him, hoping he'll have a change of heart eventually.

It's holes like these that make New York a tiresome watch. read full review...

Movie lovers all over the world are desperate to see a good entertaining movie after the long non-happening break in Hindi Cinema. And even a marginally good movie could possibly become a profit earner for its producers at this particular point of time. But “Paying Guest” doesn’t even score the minimum points to qualify at that level. It is a completely out of tune project with an all predictable storyline and repetitive gags.

The plot can be easily guessed from its title and on air promos, which revolves around men posing as girls to get a shelter as Paying Guests. We have already witnessed the same narrative in many movies in the past and the only thing which could have saved the movie was its treatment and performances. Sadly, the movie doesn’t have anything to hold your interest in those departments too. From the start itself, you already know what is going to happen next and you simply give up all your hopes of watching a quality comedy from there on. All the four key characters lose their jobs, have no place to live and then find a home where only married couples are allowed as Paying Guests. It all sounds like a book already read till the last page. So there is no surprise element as far as the story is concerned...read full review....

The last time a couple of dashing Bollywood heroes couldn’t find a house to rent, they turned into a gay couple: Abhishek and John hung out with pretty Priyanka in a fancy apartment in Miami, and their ‘dostana’ was all very cosy.

The quartet in ‘Paying Guests’—Shreyas, Jaaved, Ashish and Vatsal—don’t have matinee idol looks, nor are their digs destined to be quite so posh, so they have to make do with the humbler, cheaper Pattaya beach, and a determinedly low brow plot. Actually, it’s not really any kind of plot, just a series of scenes being played broadly, very broadly, for laughs

Jaaved and Shreyas stuff oranges down their vests, paint their lips, and become the ‘wives’ (the other two are the ‘husbands’), because that’s the only way landlord Jhonny Lever will let out rooms. The soundtrack encompasses four originals and two remixes.

The first song is "Jack and Jill", which starts with an animated voice. The pace of the number, crooned by Shaan and Earl D'Souza, is slow and the track is high on western musical arrangements. But it fails to impress. The major drawback of the song is the lyrics.

The re-mixed version of "Jack and Jill" is faster and suitable for the dance floor.

Paying Guest revolves around Shreyas Talpade, Javed Jaffrey and Ashish Choudhary, three best friends staying together as paying guests in Kiska Miglani’s (Asrani) house in Bangkok. But when Ashish’s cousin Vatsal Seth arrives from India to stay with them they end up messing things one drunken night and are thrown out by Kiska. Now jobless and homeless, the four go about in desperate search of budget accommodation. They end up getting one owned by Shreyas’s ex-employer Ballu (Johnny Lever and his wife played by Delnaaz Paul) but with a condition that they should be married. So Ashish and Vatsal end up turning Shreyas and Javed into their respective wives. Ballu is forever troubled by his younger brother Rocky (Chunky) who wants to get their father’s hotel in his name. What confusion it all leads to when the four leading ladies – Neha Dhupia, Celina, Riya and Sayali get involved in some way or the other forms the rest of the film.

While it was claimed to be the cinematic version of debutante director Paritosh Painter’s play by the same name, the entire film actually appears ripped off from actor Sachin directed Marathi super duper hit film that ran for almost 75 weeks called Ashi Hi Banva Banvi (1988). The story revolves around Suhani (Gayatri Patel), a passionate young dancer who wants to make it big, and fourteen year old Aftab (Aquib Afzal), a street dancer. Until the two meet, Suhani can dream of nothing beyond starring in a music video, while Aftab just wants to make a living.

One fateful night, both their lives are set to take a twist. Suhani spots Aftab's gang dancing on a street corner and their raw talent pushes her to dream bigger. She sets about getting them into the spotlight and showcasing their talent. Suhani (Gayatri Patel), a dance teacher, dreams of becoming a star without compromising with her principles. Impressed by a group of street kids (Aabhaas Yadav, Pandey, Arora), she includes them in her dance school and tries to change their lives. Gradually, Suhani does achieve her dream. However, her battle with life doesn't end there.

National award winning editor-turned-director Aarif Sheikh does produce some winning moments but he is hampered by a not-so-tight narration in the form of Sibtain Shahidi's screenplay. Patel's pre-interval romantic scenes with Ajay Chaudhary (another debutant) seem a bit stretched.

Performance wise, Patel confidently delivers her lines and dances exceedingly well. She can be a lookout for the future. Yadav in the role of a roadside tapori impresses and so does the rest of his gang. Ajay Chaudhary and Aquib Afzal fit well in their characters....read Full Review...

There is something about Bollywood that draws hordes of people to it each day. Perhaps it's just the glitz and glamour or maybe something else. I may never entirely be sure. But I am quite certain that Gayatri Patel, the leading lady of this week's release is quite enamoured by the industry.

Gayatri Patel is the daughter of Dr Arvind Patel, who (we are told) owns a chain of motels in the US. So when his little daughter wanted to make a splash in tinsel town, Dr Patel must have decided to make a movie for her.

Let's Dance is the story of a dancer, Suhani (Gayatri Patel) who wants to make it big in showbiz without accepting the strings that come attached along with it.

So you have Suhani turning down the casting couch, refusing to wear revealing clothes and still trying hard to find a foothold. Meanwhile she also teaches a bunch of underprivileged kids (who strangely don't look underprivileged at all) how to dance....read Full Review....

Dance like no one’s watching! Perhaps the makers took the saying a bit too seriously (and in the wrong context) while producing this dance-drama. National Award winning editor Aarif Shaikh, unfortunately, isn’t able to keep either the dance crisp or drama concise in his directorial debut, going overboard with both.

Suhaani (Gayatri Patel) goes gyrating around Lokhandwala lanes a la Antra Mali of Naach . Passionate about dancing, she runs a choreography-class without monetary aspirations and hopes to make it big one day. As she somersaults in her drawing room in frustrating fury, downside dhabewala Neil (Ajai Chowdhary) gazes at her a la Shah Rukh Khan of Dil To Pagal Hai . Alas his helping hand is only restricted till watermelon juice.

Enter RJ (Aquib Afzal) who launches Suhaani as a choreographer in his next music video, tweaking the romance into Rangeela mode. But as he attempts dance pe chance through his indecent advances, Suhaani retracts. And so does her dream of rehabilitating a group of drug-peddling kids through a dance video.

5. Bolleywood Hungama

This week, another father - Arvind Patel - attempts to showcase his daughter Gayatri Patel's dancing skills in 'Let's Dance', directed by Aarif Sheikh. Come to think of it, such launch pads often act as a showreel for furthering the career in Bollywood. In that respect, 'Let's Dance' succeeds... to an extent.

No issues if 'Let's Dance' seeks inspiration from elsewhere, but in an effort to showcase Gayatri's dances, the remaining aspects take a backseat. The dances appeal, but the love story doesn't. And the crime angle, injected in the plotline, is a big bore.

Let's be specific. Gayatri's dances are a treat, but her love interest cuts a sorry picture. The street children's connection with a crook also seems unwarranted.

This is the kind of film that doting fathers used to make, and clearly still do, to launch their aspiring star sons, where the elements of hero-hood – singing, dancing, fighting—crowd every inch of script space.
Old school producer Vashu makes sure that sonnyboy Jackky does all this, and then takes out some insurance: in ‘Kal Kissne Dekha’, the small town lad from Chandigarh who fetches up in a Mumbai college to make his future can, oh my god, see the future.

A movie with debutants, ‘Kal Kissne Dekha’ is by Bollywood’s once ace producer Vashu Bhagnani, who has produced numerous movies with No.1 in title. So here is a movie where he is launching his son Jackky Bhagnani and Vaishali Desai, granddaughter of late Manmohan Desai. The flick promises freshness because of the newcomers, but it’s hard to say the same about the movie’s music.Music director duo Sajid-Wajid has tried to come up with nice bearable tunes but unfortunately they’re not catchy enough, though few songs from the movie can appeal to some. Yet another film that features a protagonist who can peep into the future, Kal Kissne Dekha stars newcomer Jackky Bhagnani as small-town bumpkin Nihaal Singh who arrives all wide-eyed in Mumbai to pursue his college education. Evidently the makers of this film haven't set foot on a Mumbai campus or they'd have known such sprawling universities have no address in Maximum City, sadly they only seem to exist in Karan Johar films – and even those are shot in London or Scotland.
Anyway, Nihaal soon falls for spoilt little rich girl Misha (played by first-timer Vyshalee Desai) after he saves her from a bomb that would have blown her into bits if he hadn't 'seen' it with his special powers just minutes before.
Next thing he knows, everyone from his buddies to the college principal is hounding him with questions about their future. Kal Kissne Dekha, launch pad for producer Vashu Bhagnanai’s son Jackky, is a heavy borrower. It’s a packed-in combination of past hits – the candy-coloured college campus, girls walking around in short skirts, and weird competitions from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai; the Archie-Betty- Veronica triangle from the same movie; the villain from Main Hoon Na; and the poor-boy-rich girl romance from Kal Kissne Dekha.
The central character—“Nihal Singh from Chandigarh” - can sing, dance, out-debate anyone, croon romantic songs, and beat up trained baddies on his own. And oh, he can also peek into the future. The girl is an archetypal “ameer ladki” devoid of any manners, throwing books at the librarian and saying things like “Misha kabhi kisi ko sorry nahi bolti”. He enters college and falls for her the next second. They dance a song in a bid to outdo each other like films of the `80s/early `90s, with two warring groups of boys and girls. That’s not about the only retro reference – there’s the college bad guy in a leather jacket riding a bike, the stage performance that brings together all the players in the story, the song resonating the film’s title, sprawling mansions, a villain named `Marshall’, unwarranted song breaks and so on. Misha goes on to insult Nihal time and again, but relents when he saves her life. They go on to sing many songs in pretty locations, with several dress changes.
The plot finally begins – Nihal forms a bond with his college warden (Rishi Kapoor). The old professor takes his protégé’s help in solving a tricky gadget. Nihal sees unpleasant visions when working on the project, but is pressurized to continue. Throwing logic to the winds and employing every trick in the book of cinema to woo the moviegoer, Priyadarshan churns out a film that's enjoyable in most parts.

Yes, discrepancies do seep in, especially in the post-interval portions, but the glitches and blemishes can easily be overlooked since the makers never promised earth-shattering and path-breaking stuff in the first place.

For those who are expecting another Hera Pheri or even another Hungama , sorry, this is not as funny. Neither is it consistent funny or original funny or brilliant funny.

Basically, Hulchul is a sorta-funny movie - though the funny starts half-way through the first half (err) and suddenly stops at the interval. Then the movie becomes a drama till the climax where it again becomes supposedly-funny (phew).

If you didn't understand the funny business above, here's the explanation for the convolution.

The movie opens with some rather not-funny-at-all situations. There's the board on Angaarchand's (Amrish Puri) house declaring "Women-kind are not allowed inside" (Funny? Shrug). Anubhav (Sanjay Suri), Antara (Shruthi Seth) and Aadi (Anoop Menon) are products of the Bombay theatre academy who nurture big Bollywood dreams. But reality soon dawns upon them that those dreams are not to easy to fulfill. Anubhav during his struggling mission encounters Meera (Gul Panag) who excitedly declares that she is his fan. The twosome fall in love and get married much to Meera’s rich parents’ wishes. The theatre guru Ibrahim Vakil (Jackie Shroff) now becomes their sole patron. Meanwhile Aadi manages to get a producer for his film which is supposed to be an adaptation of famous Shakespearean play, Hamlet. The film starring Anubhav in the main lead gets stuck midway owing to an untimely demise of their producer. At the same time Meera runs into some pregnancy complications which in turn lead to an extra ordinary turn of fortunes for Anubhav. All these problems drive Anubhav to become a gigolo who trades his body to sex hungry woman in return of money. But as he solicits his clients, he imagines them to be characters in a movie till he gets to a point when he cannot differentiate whether he is a gigolo, an actor or an ordinary man.

The basic premise of the film is really interesting since its topical and such things do happen in present times in Bollywood. But once the situations are established and Anubhav turns a male prostitute, the film losses its way. You also stop caring much about the characters and simply can’t relate to them. Then there is this melodramatic angle forcibly thrown in about Anubhav’s new born daughter’s illness and how Gul Panag thinking their daughter is dead. Also what were the makers thinking when giving those lines for Sanjay Suri to mouth when he is narrating his sex worker experiences? Simply cringe worthy. Director Rajiv Nath has tried to do the same with "Anubhav", which tries to underline that men are as vulnerable to sexual abuse as women in Bollywood.

Though a thematically good film, "Anubhav" has not been executed properly, especially the first one hour.

The only saving grace in the film is Sanjay Suri, who plays the title role. The scenes where Sanjay is shown grieving and regretting his decision to be a gigolo to save his newborn daughter are extremely touching.

Gul Panag, who plays his wife, is good in the emotional scenes.

Chandrachur Singh would have to wait for a while before he could actually term a movie as a 'comeback film'. That's because 'Maruti Mera Dosst' is certainly not the film that would bring him back in the reckoning.

Two years after his last release 'Sarhad Paar', Chandrachur Singh is seen once again on the silver screen. In this 'part live, part animation' film, he reprises the role of a Mr. Richie Rich who has lost his wife and has to raise a child (Ritika Shrivastava) all by himself.

So the basic plot of 'Maruti Mera Dosst' pretty much is on the same lines as 2000 film 'Raju Chacha'. We have a huge mansion, a doting father, an innocent child, some scheming relatives, including one played by Sushmita Mukherji, and a horde of villains like those essayed by Murli Sharma and Shahbaaz Khan, and finally an ultimate dost (friend).

Taalis for a desi kiddies flick that doesn't talk down and actually believes that stories can be told the Snow White and Cinderella way in native cinema too. With hardly any hype and a title that says nothing, this film sure does come as a surprise. First, because the kids actually act as kids. The boy Hanuman is quite adorable in his unkempt slacks and his passion for swinging on a tyre, when not saving the world. The elders are either delightfully cruel, like Sushmita Mukherjee or genteel and kind like Chandrachur Singh and the film mercifully doesn't have any overt morals to preach to all us paapis. Of course, the animation (just a part of the film) could have been better. But we'll ignore that.

So what does it have? A neat little story, told with panache, almost like a fairy tale. Young Rameshwari loses her mother and finds solace in the larger-than-life Hanuman statue near her house. Plot at CoolIndianGuy

An enterprise is an undertaking.RamGopal Varma's latest gangster flick COMPANY-a law and order enterprise, undertakes one and all for an enthralling raid into the dens of dons, their molls, mates guts and guns alike. The film de facto probes into the intimate and intricate details of the functioning or should we say malfunctioning of such a company whose business is crime. Ignore people who tell you Company is Satya on a bigger canvas and don't even think in your wildest dreams that you can skip the film. It is a mast-must see for the following reasons: Impeccable technical wizardry, be it Varma's excellent direction, Chandan Arora's sharp editing, Jaideep Sahni's brash yet bold screenplay for his script packed with thrills which sure will send a few chills down the spine, Hemant Chaturvedi's unconventional cinematography, freaky background score by Sandeep Chowtha.

1. Palnet Bolleywood By Alok Kumar
Finally, Varma´s direction is excellent. Technically, the film is superb. Everything from the slick camera angles to the action shots shout panache and style. Varma´s use of fast edits and unconventional camera views are very innovative for Hindi cinema. The one complaint would have to be in the depeartment of editing, which could´ve been crisper. Some edited dramatic scenes could have led to a faster paced narrative in the second half.

The film is fine as it is, but could´ve been enhanced with a shorter running time. Another flaw in the film is, perhaps, the overuse of Mumbai slang and dialect, giving the film a limited appeal to those not familiar with Mumbai. Satya had the same problem, as did Mazhar Khan´s Gang. Perhaps more of a universal Hindi dialect would have worked in favor of the film.

Production values are worth a mention. Varma has taken his large budget and has put it to good use. Instead of doing what most big-budget film producers do (Silly song-damce sequences in Egypt and Alaska, etc.), Varma has used the money in the technical departments, giving the film a very unique look, as well as creating an important atmosphere for the story. Nowhere does Varma interrupt with mindless comedy or unnecessary romance. He keeps the regular Hindi film conventions at a minimum. After Jungle, Kaun, Satya, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, Rangeela, Mast, and Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (He produced it, didn´t direct it), Varma has brought his audience yet another innovative and enjoyable film. Company should prove to be a sound investment of time and effort for all those involved. Ajay Devgan and Manisha Koirala´s erratic career graphs can, perhaps, boast of another hit, as they are bound to be appreciated in their respective roles. Years back director Ajay Chandok started working on three projects - Nehlle Pe Dehlla, Kisse Pyaar Karoon and Team - The Force. While Nehlle Pe Dehlla eventually got released a few months back, Kisse Pyaar Karoon is still waiting in the cans. Meanwhile Team - The Force will hopefully see the light of the day in a few weeks from now, even as it's promotion continues to be patchy.

Starring Sohail Khan, Amrita Arora, Aarti Chhabria and Yash Tonk in lead roles, the film bears a young look and promises a young score by Daboo Malik. In the end it turns out to be, well, just a promise!

When a track's title goes as 'Chika Chika Boom', one knows that the number is not required to be taken seriously. Add to it opening lyrics like 'Kya Item Hai Re Baap', and you know that you have reached the bottom of the barrel in the very first minute. Though the movie is showing at multiplexes but the shows are cancelled as they don’t have an audience. The screening that I attended had five people. Four were seeing the movie to write a review and the other was a theatre actor watching it ‘just like that’. The manager had to be forced to play the movie for us. To save costs, even the AC was running on low power and I had to fan myself.
Anyway, getting to Team, it is directed by Ajay Chandhok whose ‘credentials’ include Kisse Pyar Karoon (forgotten), Khalbali: Fun Unlimited (not released as yet) and Nehla Pe Dehla ( people wondered why Saif had such a release after Omkara; the movie had a 90’s feel)

Sohail Khan, Vrajesh Hirjee, Yash Tonk play three friends who want to make it big as musicians. They have Khulbushan Kharbanda as their foster father. Khulbushan gets threatened by the local don, played by Sayaji Shinde. He is an extortionist. Raj (Sohail), Yash (Yash Tonk) and Jassi (Vrajesh) are three best pals who aim to strike big in the music industry but are down on luck. They stay as paying guests at Baabe’s (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) villa. Seeing their honest zest for making it big in the field of music, Baabe offers them a timely financial help and produces their first video album. But their joys are short lived as Underworld don Raman Shetty (Sayaji Shinde) starts making extortion calls to Baabe since he wants to usurp his palatial villa. Story

Priya Chopra (Rani Mukherjee) is a fashion designer and Raj Mathur (Shahrukh Khan) owns a small trucking company. They meet on the road, quarrel, and then fall for each other. Priya, who was going to Greece to become engaged to her childhood friend. Raj follows Priya to Greece and there Priya realises that she is also love in with Raj. So at the engagement party, Priya decides to marry Raj. They get married and come back to India. They have a misunderstanding between each other. Undoubtedly, Chalte Chalte is the kind of film the masses will clamor up to. It’s the kind of film people expect to see Shah Rukh Khan in when he’s not busy doing his rare films like Asoka or Devdas. Furthermore, it has entertainment value, songs, comedy and the emotion. The film is enjoyable overall, however, retrospectively speaking; Chalte Chalte could have been much more. I’m sure walking out of the cinema you’d hear, “after a long time we’ve had a nice film”. I hope that doesn’t send signals off to our directors (especially after Andaaz), as that is just an indication of how horrible previous releases have been.

For Chalte Chalte, fault lies in that there is emphasis placed on the marital problems but all resolutions are faux. The one powerhouse scene where Raj confronts Priya about her asking Sameer for money is still left unresolved at the end of the film and while the moral is that problems are to be worked out and not placed too much emphasis on, the couple never really discuss their problem without remaining one sided. Addition to the porty is Aadesh Srivastava and what we get is the third venture from Dreamz Unlimited after Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani - a satire on commercialization of society and Asoka - a historical. Both the movies had their fair share of merit but couldn't do much at the box-office. With Chalte Chalte,the producer trio of Khan, Mirza and Juhi Chawla, in association with UTV Productions, play safe and come up with a romantic feel good flick !! A lover boy role has always paid for SRK - DDLJ, KKHH, DTPH and Mohabbatein being case in point. But his role in Chalte Chalte (CC) is diametrically opposite to his role in DTPH. Whereas in DTPH he played a guy who doesn't believe in love and the concept of two people living together for an entire life after marriage, in CC it is his character who is tooooo.... mushy at heart, tooooo....romantic and toooo....moony eyed. Whereas the girl he wooes and gets married to - Rani Mukherjee - is the opposite who is much more level headed (though being fairly romantic at heart) and much more practical. And the situations that arise due to such conflicting personalities forms the crux of the storyline of CC !!

Coming to music of CC, it has 4 tracks by Aadesh Srivastava and 3 by Jatin Lalit. And this has to be agreed that both Aadesh and musician duo of Jatin Lalit deliver music that goes with the mood of the movies rather than doing something to prove their supremacy over the other. Music conveys their individual styles and still manages to gel well with the overall narrative of the movie. Examples being 'Tauba Tumhaare Yeh Ishaare' and ' Suno Na Suno Na'. Both the tracks are extrememly melodious, very well composed - - - and they are distinct compositions by Jatin Lalit (Tauba) and Aadesh (Suno Na). The story revolves around three supermodels Anu Gaekwad [Madhu Sapre], Sheila Bardez [Padma Lakshmi] and Rina [Katrina Kaif] who are also thick friends. They become entangled in a jewelry heist at a prestigious fashion show which changes their lives..During the show, another model trips Anu purposely on the ramp much to her public embarrassment. Her friends Rina and Sheila comes to her rescue and they confronts the model there itself. In the subsequent brawl, to everyone's surprise, hundreds of glittering diamonds fall from the model's hair on to the runway. Media and the audience snatch the diamonds as the show turns into a chaos. The movie is been shot in Dubai, Sri Lanka and India. It has been financed by the Hindujas, so its box-office success means a lot.

‘Boom’ is all hype and little substance. In spite of the 'eye-catching' cast ensemble that includes three sensuous belles – Padma, Katrina and Madhu Sapre – Amitabh Bachchan, and the Hollywood stunner Bo Derek, the movie fails to hold the viewer interest.

The movie has a stylish look and captivating music score, but that is all about it. There is too much of exposure (and vulgarity too, thanks to the lewd character Boom Shankar played by Javed Jaffery) that makes the movie unwatchable for the family crowd.

Superstar

Amitabh Bachchan is made to look like a weirdo in the movie. All-dressed in white, Big B plays the underworld kingpin Bade Mia who delights in reading comics and chasing Hollywood fantasies in his free time. There is a sequence in the movie where the superstar is shown running after Bo Derek. The scene is recreated from Derek’s classic movie ‘10’.

Zeenat Aman, who returns to the silver screen after a long sabbatical, is wasted in the role of Bade Mia’s secretary who also does a jig for her boss at times.read full review...

Story

Mohan Bhargava is an NRI working at NASA in a lucrative and prestigious position. He had been a student at the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League school with a large Asian population. After twelve years in the US, he decides to return to India to find his nanny, Kaveri Amma, with whom he has completely lost touch. The movie is narrated by two puppets, voiced by Naseeruddin Shah and his real-life wife Ratna Pathak Shah. Enthusiastic young Lachchi (Rani Mukerji) is to be married to Kishen (Shahrukh Khan), the son of the rich merchant Bhanwarlal (Anupam Kher). Kishen is a dutiful son who honors his father's wish to start a new, far-away business on a predetermined auspicious date, which happens to be the day after the wedding ceremony. On the wedding night, Kishen turns away from his wife to finish his bookkeeping, and in the early morning hours sets off on a business trip that is to last five years. Lachchi is devastated; Gajrobai (Juhi Chawla), her husband's sister-in-law, consoles her, empathizing on the grounds that Gajrobai's husband (Sunil Shetty) has also disappeared. The next day, a ghost appears, having taken Kishen's shape and voice because of his own attachment to Lachchi.

Lachchi is thus presented a riddle (hence the title "paheli") between the representation of all of her desires in the form of the ghost and her real husband. She takes this new, fond, sexual, magical, social, self-confident version of Kishen as hers. As Kishen, the ghost befriends all of the real Kishen's family and keeps Bhanwarlal happy by providing him with magical, possibly illusory, gold coins. His only blunder is in his treatment of the messenger Bhoja, who is perplexed by the idea that Kishen has sent a letter from his business trip only to receive it himself in his own house and offended when the ghost (who appears as Kishen) does not offer him a drink of water. Lachchi's bliss goes on until four years later, when she is pregnant and the real Kishen realizes that he misses his wife. He returns to find the ghost in his (Kishen's) own form. Kishen's family is unable to determine which of the doppelgangers is the real Kishen (the ghost refusing to confess. They decide to visit the king so that he can arbitrate. On the way to the king they meet an old shepherd (Amitabh Bachchan) who helps them out. He asks the real son of Bhanwarlal to pick up hot coals, asks the real husband to gather the sheep, and asks Lachchi's real paramour to enter a water-bottle. The real Kishen is found out and everyone returns home. Lachchi is devastated over the loss of the ghost. In the very end it is revealed that the ghost has escaped the bottle and taken control of Kishen's body in order to live with her. By now Lachchi has given birth to a daughter, Looni Ma, by whose identification the ghost exposes his identity to Lachchi.

On the whole ´Paheli´ is fantasy joyride for the whole family, with a slightly slow first half (though livened up by some excellent special effects) and a thrill a minute second half. But the lovely Hariharan song ´Khali hai tere bina dono ankhiyan´ should be edited out as it slows the pace of the movie. Shah Rukh´s scenes with Rani are wonderful, specially their romantic scenes and the one where he owns up that he is not a human. The final climax scene standout, not to mention the light scenes between Shah Rukh, Anupam and Rajpal Yadav.

Muneesh Sappal´s sets bring authentic Rajasthani ambience to the screen and Ravi K. Chandran´s cinematography is there to capture it in the rich and vibarant colours (which are not gawdy) and will rate amongst his finest works. read full review...

In Zeher, he plays an acerbic cop who struggles through an upcoming divorce with cop-wife Shamita Shetty and a bit on the side with mysterious woman Udita Goswami. Of course, the bit on the side grows into a big-big storm as His surging hormones force him to fall for every lie that is thrown at his face.

He ends up becoming a hapless pawn in a game of drugs and blood with everything being on stake. On the one hand, he is on the threshold of losing his wife whom he still loves, despite his philandering. And on the other, his job too becomes jeopardised when he steals the money he has recovered from a drug raid and gives it to his girlfriend who tells him she dying of cancer, apart from bearing his child and being beaten up by a wicked husband. Zeher is yet another film produced by Mahesh Bhatt that deals with extra-martial relationships. It is directed by his nephew debutant Mohit Suri and stars another nephew Emraan Hashmi.

Story

A normal day... A little face ...A string of clues ... A mysterious case ...It's a regular day at Gulmohar Complex. Spunky, independent, 75 year old Naani is on her way back home from her daily morning walk. Suddenly her eye catches the face of a little girl peeping nervously from a 3rd floor window. The flat belongs to a newly arrived childless couple.

The girl hides away quickly. Naani's intrigue about the little girl leads her to a possible murder. Naani finds herself in the middle of a mystery where some people will come to her aid, some will be indifferent and some will prove to be dangerous. When the CID dismisses Naani's story due to lack of hard evidence, she transforms into a detective.

Story

Raj Singh Puri is best friends with L.K. Malhotra who is in turn younger brother to J.K. Malhotra. The brothers are business tycoons and Raj works in their company. Raj is father to three young daughters, the first one gets married through arrangement but the second one marries her lover. After a few weeks at her in-laws, the second daughter returns home asking for divorce. After this Raj and her last daughter become strictly against love and relationships. All this changes when Isha (the third daughter) falls in love with the heir to the Malhotra empire, Ronit, L.K. Malhotra's son. The ask for Raj's blessing but he bluntly refuses and Isha understandingly shuns Ronit and Raj arranges for Ronit to be married to the daughter of another tycoon. Meanwhile, the film crew he has left for Sonja's pretty eyes falls into chaos. Swiss romantic comedy mixing Bollywood kitsch and Bernese Alps drama.

TANDOORI LOVE, directed by Oliver Paulus, is a very unusual blend, as
Bollywood comes to Switzerland. A musical that works more often than not,
it is a romantic comedy that doesn't fit naturally into any genre. It's a
cinematic melting pot that goes down as easily as the colorful Indian food
that TANDOORI LOVE makes appear downright delicious in every single close-up
of its preparation.

Opening with some of the most unappealing shots that I've ever seen of
Swiss-German cuisine, the movie makes you almost sad that the local Swiss
residents have to count on greasy pigs' feet and bloated sausages for their
diet. (Actually, I like Swiss food, save the pigs' feet, but I digress.)

When we meet the clueless Markus (Martin Schick), he is announcing his
upcoming marriage to Sonja (Lavinia Wilson). Too bad he didn't ask her in

Just like Mr India's father gifted him the miraculous watch – photographer Ray Acharya (Neil Nitin Mukesh) inherits a special camera from his grandfather. No, it doesn't make him invisible. Instead this camera gives its user a peek into the future. Describing how it works is too tedious to put down in words. Maybe that's why even the writers of Aa Dekhen Zara didn't bother to give any explanations. So let's just say it is a futuristic camera. And if you set it for a particular date and click a picture of the stock exchange - you get the image of that day's sensex! Certainly a gadget that would make 007 and Q proud.

Ray's neighbour is a hottie in hot pants named Simi (Bipasha Basu). She looks like she has walked straight out of the sets of Race or Bachna Ae Haseeno. Only difference being, the new 'lucky boy' in her on-screen life. Ray uses the camera to strike gold on the gambling circuit as well as woo Simi. Jaadu, the lovable alien of Koi Mil Gaya isn't alone anymore. Sci-fi comes to India with a bang. Not in the shape of extra-terrestrials and supernatural beings, but more in the form of time travel and paranormal occurrences.

After 13B, which serenaded a futuristic television set, the focus this week is on an equally empowered camera that captures the future in its sepia frames. The million-dollar invention falls into the hands of a down-and-out wild life photographer, Ray Acharya (Neil Nitin Mukesh) after its inventor -- the shutterbug's grandad -- dies. Not much of a legacy, laments the jobless bloke who's down to his last penny and doesn't have much to do, other than talk to the stray pigeons on his window or play voyeur to Simi (Bipasha Basu), the sexy DJ in the opposite apartment. In one such idle moment, he clicks her picture with the old camera while she's sashaying in her room, only to discover a photograph that shows her being shot in a bar. Time for Ray to jump into action and find a new focus to his going-nowhere life. He uses the camera, not only to save his girlfriend's life, but also to make millions by clicking lottery tickets and race horses to know their future. In Aa Dekhen Zara, Neil Nitin Mukesh plays a photographer whose deceased grandpa leaves him a camera that can take photographs of future events. At least someone associated with this film should have had the good sense to use this camera to foresee how this film was shaping up. Had they done that, they might have saved this movie from turning into the complete train-wreck that it is!

Like pretty much anyone in his place would have done, Neil uses the camera to make a killing at lotteries, the races and the stock exchange. His girlfriend's role is played by Bipasha Basu wearing a permanent scowl - perhaps she did use the camera to determine the film's fate after all. Anyway, when everyone from a dishonest cop to a greedy thug discovers the secret of the camera and wants to get a hold of it, Neil and Bipasha must flee the scene, landing up in Bangkok where they find the time to break into an item song at a Thai watering hole in between dodging bullets from their nemeses. When a movie director takes special interest in his film's soundtrack, it shows. Even more when the filmmaker happens to be a thinking man, as we learned with Anurag Kashyap's Dev.D and Gulaal. Nagesh Kukunoor has got three (four?) different dudes contributing to the soundtrack of his soon-to-hit-the-theatres Akshay Kumar starrer 8x10 Tasveer.

Irfan Siddiqui has written the lyrics to Nazaara Hai, which starts with a neat bassline. Vishal Dadlani sings Nazaara Hai, which has crisp sounding drums and is pretty catchy. Dadlani's voice has its limitations, a fact which the Pentagram vocalist seems to be well aware of - but he makes good use of whatever he can do with it. Nazaara Hai also has two guitar solos which have a funny tone. The break in the song sounds damn good, especially with the intro bassline and the drums coming in. Story

MKMJA is the story of Maya. Maya lives in New Delhi, is married to Vikram and has a daughter Priya. Maya's life is mundane and centers around her family.One evening she overhears a conversation between her husband and another woman and realises that he's having an affair. Her simple, family centric life around her breaks down and she realises how Vikram had slowly degenerated her confidence and self esteem in the past few years of their marriage. 'Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye' was a number originally composed by Jatin Lalit more than a decade back for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge. While the composer duo has split, Lalit Pandit gets behind the scenes composing for this romantic comedy cum fantasy flick that also sees guest compositions by Siddharath Coutto. Story

Sona (Konkona Sen Sharma) arrives in Bombay with her dreams of becoming a film star. Wide eyed but ambitious, she does whatever it takes, to make it. She lives on her own in a rented apartment - a luxury for most in this bustling city and spends her time with a motley crew of loyal friends whose lives are also entwined with Bollywood, each one in search of a bigger dream.

Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) has just moved to the city leaving the comforts of his parents Delhi home. He is a mover, he is used to getting what he wants and is smart enough to know when to demand it and when to manipulate it. He is young and handsome, and ful| of promise. Sona begins to enjoy Vikram's attention and affections; they develop a romantic relationship.
Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) is a successful though superstitious producer who only works with the biggest stars. He is making a potential blockbuster launching the nubile Nikki Khurana (Isha Sharwani), the 18-year-old daughter of 70's superstar, Neena (Dimple Kapadia). The hero of the film, Zaffar Khan (Hrithik Roshan), is Rolly's favorite superstar. He was launched by Rolly and went on to become a huge draw at the box office.

The wheels of fate indeed continue to spin favorably for Vikram, as elsewhere in the industry, havoc spreads on the sets of producer Rommy Rolly's new film. Vikram is called in for an audition and uses this opportunity to the fullest.

The film is about a slice of Bollywood life, in which Kismet plays a huge role. Here, notions of superstition, fate and destiny underline every life, as grand desires and opportunity converge to form strange patterns.

In such an unpredictable climate is success and failure what others define for you or is it something you decide for yourself.

Luck By Chance is a contemporary tale set in a world desperate to escape its own reality.

I am confused. Always, always I am confused between Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy [referred in here as SEL] and A R Rehman. I don't want to compare the two, but naturally comparison ho jaati hai. Rehman gives such stupendous score in each film. While SEL gives music, which is totally involved in the film. One can not think anything but the movie itself. Like in TZP, Rock On – which we have heard recently. Tracks are so dedicated to the movie itself.

Luck By Chance, is a movie about Film Industry, aspirations of youth to join it and hopes higher then sky. To become star, a big star in this wide wide sky. So here, SEL presents a really interesting combination of tracks for the movie. While daddy dearest Javed Akhtar gave some nice words to it. After all, its Zoya Akhtar's debut as Director.

Zoya Akhtar may probably be best known because of her last name. And being a daughter of the famous Javed Akhtar and sister of Farhan Akhtar is no mean task.

Not surprisingly for the longest time Zoya has been in the shadows. She's been a casting director and a writer for quite many films but never really been in the limelight as Farhan and Javed.
