IDEA ITA AWARDS

The IDEA-ITA (Indian Telivision Acadamy) Awards, 2008 which has become a benchmark for excellence in television is back. This year, the Awards have received upwards of 3,000 entries in various categories from the production houses – which is well and truly historic. One of the highlights of The IDEA-ITA Awards, 2008, will be the declaration of the Top-4 nominees in the IDEA Face of the Year (Male/Female) categories, arrived at by Popular-poll on Mobile, internet as well as postal vote.
This year, something unique is being done in the event. All the top 4 nominees for the IDEA Glamour Face of the Year categories, will be taken to various cities, whereby they will have a direct one-to-one with the viewers so that they can canvass for themselves in person. This year, a rare effort is being created to provide a bridge between the nominees and the viewers. The ITA is all the time in pursuit of such bridges, be it amongst the disparate sectors of the TV industry or with the viewers. That vindicates and underscores our standing as the only instrument of interaction for the TV fraternity in the country and we are immensely pleased that the Idea is going all out to carry that forward”, added Shashi Ranjan, Convenor ITA.

Jumbo

JUMBO

Characters

Jumbo - Akshay Kumar
During his childhood, he is a naughty jungle elephant who is curious about his father who is never around.

He leaves his herd to find his father and embarks on a journey which culminates in him becoming the royal elephant for the king.
Sonia - Lara Dutta
A pretty, cheerful, young female elephant with a kind heart.

Initially Jumbo is upset with her because he thinks that she's a trickster but after spending time with her, their relationship blossoms into pure love.

Dildaar - Rajpal Yadav
A messenger from the army, he is jumbo's partner and irrepressible sidekick.

He is a talkative bird, funny, silly, self-absorbed and opinionated, acting like a fussy nanny, often giving advice to jumbo.

Devi - Dimple Kapadia
She is Jumbo's mother and hates humans above all else.

She is the embodiment of pure love and security that a mother could give her child.

She is extremely protective of her child but eventually can't stand in the way of his destiny.
Bakhtavar - Gulshan Grover
He is the Royal Elephant of the opposing army. He is the one who killed Jumbo's father.

In this story he represents the fear that Jumbo has to overcome.

Sikandar
He is an aged Royal Elephant who had fought the war along with Jumbo's father.

It is his words of wisdom that make Jumbo reconsider his final decision.

The Gang
The gang are nothing but a bunch of unruly brats.

They always play rough, they are disobedient and are consistently getting into trouble. Wherever they go, mayhem and mess follows.


Synopsis

As a young elephant, Jumbo is taunted by the other elephants because he is fatherless. Naturally, Jumbo is curious about his father, and he's told that his father is a war elephant for the king.

So Jumbo wants to find his father. Still a young elephant, he wanders off in search of his father.

He is soon captured by a raiding party. In trying to escape from the camp, the young elephant is befriended by a boy prince, who has been ransomed to his foes. The prince has the ability to calm Jumbo into thinking clearly, and Jumbo makes his escape.

A weakened Jumbo then comes upon a village where humans and elephants are working together. He is befriended by a beautiful young elephant cow, but is then chained up until he is tamed. Jumbo soon learns to value the humans who have captured him. Under the training of a wise, old mahout, he becomes bigger and stronger.

A local warlord comes around annually to collect tax from the village, and his taxes have become greedier each year. The village rebels, and with the humans and elephants working together, the warlord and his beasts are defeated.

The call then goes out from the king for elephants for his army. Jumbo is taken to the palace. There, he is seen by his mother, who calls out to him. Jumbo goes wild in trying to break free from his chains to meet his mother. The King notices this, and remembers Jumbo from his childhood. The king is able to calm Jumbo, and from then on Jumbo serves as the personal war elephant of the king.

In battle, Jumbo meets a giant war elephant with fiery eyes that was responsible for the death of Jumbo's father, and Jumbo gets a chance to acquit himself in battle for the glory of the kingdom, and take revenge.

Synopsis:

Imagine being one of the most successful businessmen in the country. Sanjay Singhania (Aamir) is a rich businessman who owns a cellular phone company. Kalpana (Asin) is a model who brags to her friends and peers that she is the love interest of Sanjay, though in reality she doesn't even know the man.
When Sanjay comes to know about this anonymous admirer of his, he decides to dispel her delusions. But on his way he sees a beautiful woman helping the handicapped kids cross the road. Instantly, Sanjay falls for her. Later, he comes to know that she is Kalpana, the same model who boasted of being his girlfriend.
Sanjay gets introduced to Kalpana but doesn't disclose his real identity. Love blossoms between the two.
While on a train ride, Kalpana saves a group of young girls from a rowdy bunch of eve-teasing goons. A few days later, the same group of eve teasers, led by their notorious head (Pradeep Rawat) close in on Kalpana. But Sanjay arrives and fights them. In the ensuing scuffle, Kalpana is killed and Sanjay is hit on his head with an iron rod.
Though Sanjay is able to survive the injury, he loses his memory. He gets only flashbacks of what really happened and his short memory makes it difficult to remember things he did just minutes back.
How this man, who can't even remember the killers of his ladylove, goes about taking his revenge is what the remaining story is about. Jiah Khan plays a medical student who helps Sanjay find the killers.

Meera Achrekar, a mathematics teacher at Vishwaprem Vidyalaya, has been a happy single for quite a while now. The great love of her life has been, and will always remain, cricket and Anil Kumble. The meticulous number cruncher is, despite not being the classic eye-candy-teenage-fantasy-fodder, a huge hit in class. And that's because Meera, unlike most teachers of her school, is more fanatical about her religion, cricket than even the school cricket captain!
Living with her family in their small home in a Mumbai chawl, Meera was initiated into her temple of Wankhede Stadium by her brother, Manoj. Manoj Anant Achrekar played cricket at the Ranji Trophy level. Sadly, middle class making-ends-meet economics got the better of the impressive Maharashtrian leggie, and passion had to make way for responsibility. Mahesh is today a cricket cynic. While Meera bunks classes and fights for season tickets to every cricket match that is played at Wankhede Stadium, Mahesh even steers clear off cricket scores! While the folk at Bhaktiyog Society have cast aspersions on her craze towards the game, the bigger problem that worries the Achrekar family is Meera's still-single status. Love suddenly blossoms with heart-specialist, Dr Arjun Sachdeva and Meera realizes that perhaps there is more to life than praying for Team India and Anil Kumble! However, in between this fabulous exchange of text messages, Valentine's Day outings and walks along Chowpatty, she confesses to Arjun that she is already married to cricket! To be honest, even if you are willing to buy into that bizarre premise - that Taani fails to recognize her own husband because he’s shaved his moustache, lost the spectacles and picked a funky hairstyle - Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is still an exhausting watch because it’s such a predictable story, because it recycles the same old clichés, and because the characters are so poorly developed.

With no story worth speaking of save a newly married uxorious husband Surinder Sahni (Shahrukh Khan) making a monkey of himself to get his young wife Taani (Anushka Sharma) to love him, an inept screenplay that makes junk like Yuvvraaj and Drona look glorious, mediocre acting by Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma that make the grotesque Tamil film stars seem great and soporific dialogs that have less life in them than Manmohan Singh’s speeches, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi heaps more shame on Bollywood and fresh infamy on the fading Yash Raj Films banner.

If you don’t have DDLJ on your mind, you won’t mind Rab Ne. But the fact remains, it’s little more than an ordinary film with extraordinary intentions.

In a nutshell, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is no DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE. It’s not MOHABBATEIN either. At best, it’s an average fare that may generate some curiosity initially, that’s it. You expect much, much more, but… alas!

…Director Aditya Chopra is letdown by his own writing. The story is not convincing, the screenplay is not water-tight and therefore, RAB NE BANA DI JODI does not create the impact it ought to make. Also, the film is quite lengthy.

The premise of Rab Ne is illogical but even if you are willing to overlook the fact that Tani fails to recognise her own husband because he loses his moustache and gels his hair, the film is a frustrating experience.

Sporadic scenes play out nicely and Shah Rukh Khan works every acting muscle to bring conviction to this story but the overwhelming emotional inconsistency fractures the film.

As events unfold, you are constantly asking: why is this happening. Eventually then, Rab Ne is a disappointment.

Sharing acting honours with Irrfan is Rahul Bose who's in his element after a long, long time. The actor sheds all his pretensions and comes across as a complete natural. After all he is the original multiplex star and such a film is his comfort zone. Even though Irrfan gets the best lines Rahul manages to hold his own.

Soha Ali Khan looks pretty and has a confident screen presence. But sadly Konkona's expressions and dialogue delivery are becoming as predictable as yesterday's news. Rahul Khanna doesn't have much to do and looks stiff in comparison to the other performers. Payal Rohatgi screeches through her part. Wish her character of a bimbette was mute as well.

But when you don't have too much of a plot to begin with, you can only take a film this far. Somewhere in the second half the situations become repetitive and jokes fall flat. Also the entire Rahul Khanna track drags, looking like an attempt to give the actor some respectable footage.

Luckily Dil Kabaddi never takes it self too seriously and the director maintains a lighthearted tone throughout. So we are spared of melodramatic, judgemental speeches about right and wrong. Which is why you are willing to overlook its flaws, as the films does manage to bring a smile on your face for most of its running time.

Synopsis: Mystery is the story of an aspiring actress Ria (Mahima Chaudhary) who models / acts in music videos but has her eyes set on making it big in films as a lead actress. During one of her shoots, she happens to meet Dev (Dino Morea) a stuntman by profession, who saves her life during an accident on the set. She's impressed with him, soon love blossoms between them and they are on a romantic high. Meanwhile Ria is offered a lead actress' role in a film by casting director Rishi Gandhi (Madan) but the condition is that she has to leave for Shimla the very next day. Dev is very happy about her getting the role in the film and sees her off, wishing all the luck. On reaching Shimla, she is introduced to the film's director Muni Gandhi (Govind Namdeo) who also praises her beauty and appreciates his assistant's perfect choice of casting her as the heroine.
Slowly Ria begins to see some unusual mystery around her. The director asks her to give a screen test but when she asks for a second take she is refused. His assistant Rishi Gandhi delivers the cassette to Remon (Suman Ranganathan) a rich female staring in a huge mansion in Shimla. Who is this woman and why the cassette has been delivered to her? What happens after the screen test? How Ria tackles the situation and what's she doing in Shimla? All this forms the crux of the story of the high voltage drama Gumnaam- The Mystery.
