Story

A normal day... A little face ...A string of clues ... A mysterious case ...It's a regular day at Gulmohar Complex. Spunky, independent, 75 year old Naani is on her way back home from her daily morning walk. Suddenly her eye catches the face of a little girl peeping nervously from a 3rd floor window. The flat belongs to a newly arrived childless couple.

The girl hides away quickly. Naani's intrigue about the little girl leads her to a possible murder. Naani finds herself in the middle of a mystery where some people will come to her aid, some will be indifferent and some will prove to be dangerous. When the CID dismisses Naani's story due to lack of hard evidence, she transforms into a detective.

Review

1. Indian Express, by Shubhra Gupta

Seventy-five year old Naani is independent, spirited, and a barrel of fun. She’s put an obnoxious son’s behaviour behind her, and is helping look after her grandson. She also minds her divorced daughter’s little girl.

The two grandkids and Bruno the dog are her faithful companions as she goes about cracking the case of a missing little girl, with aplomb, leaving the local CID red-faced.

‘Detective Naani’ could have been a perfect summer hols film: what better than a cuddly-but-sharp Miss Marple like figure, a couple of smart children... read full review

2. IBNLive, Rajeev Masand

Detective Naani, which arrives at the cinemas this weekend, has a title that suggests the movie will be a cute comedy about a feisty grandma blessed with Sherlock Holmes' crime-solving skills.

If only it were!

It is in reality an excruciatingly unfunny film about a 72-year-old biddy who uncovers a child-kidnapping racket by sniffing around a neighbor's home, and employing everyone from the local garbage-man to the frisky teenagers in her housing society to gather evidence against the suspicious neighbor. ..read full review

3. Buzz18, Abhishek Mande

In all fairness you have to give it to Romila Mukherjee, who has brought together some very prominent faces from the television together for her first feature film Detective Naani.

The film that tells the story of an enterprising grandmother solving a mystery case stars Ava Mukherjee, the popular grandmother figure from the Dabur advertisements. There is also Amrita Saluja, the hip Whirlpool mom. Shweta Gulati, the girl who starred in an immensely popular television show called Remix also puts up an appearance here.. read full review.
