Priyadarshan began his advent in Bollywood with Hera Pheri and later created some Hungama at the box office. And now he is back with Hulchul, an out and out comedy that is sure to keep you in splits - from the beginning till the end. Make sure you don't use your brain while watching the film and the chances are that you will enjoy the film thoroughly.

The remake of Malayalam hit Godfather, Hulchul is about two warring families and their never-ending rivalry.

One of the families headed by Angaarchand (Amrish Puri) have four sons (Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz Khan and Akshaye Khanna). Owing to their previous experiences with women, they have taken a vow to keep away from women.

Lakshmidevi (Lakshmi), the landlord
of the neighbouring village is waiting to take revenge on Angaarchand and his family. Fortunately or unfortunately, Angaarchand's youngest son Jai (Akshaye) falls head over heels in love with Lakshmidevi's granddaughter, Anjali (Kareena Kapoor) as they study in the same college. Amidst many comical errors, ...read full review...

It's important to deliver what you promise. The promos of HULCHUL promise a wacko theme and laughter unlimited. After watching the film, you realize that the makers do deliver a film that's pretty serious about offering wholesome entertainment.

Throwing logic to the winds and employing every trick in the book of cinema to woo the moviegoer, Priyadarshan churns out a film that's enjoyable in most parts.

Yes, discrepancies do seep in, especially in the post-interval portions, but the glitches and blemishes can easily be overlooked since the makers never promised earth-shattering and path-breaking stuff in the first place.

Treat this film as an entertainer, without taxing your brains, and chances are you'd enjoy the film thoroughly!

HULCHUL is about two warring families and their never-ending rivalry.

Fiery Angaarchand [Amrish Puri] and his family of four sons [Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz Khan and Akshaye Khanna] have taken a vow to stay away from women owing to a past family tragedy.

The mere mention of the opposite sex is 'strictly forbidden' in their family. Actually, it's the battle over a woman that resulted in the entire feud...read full review....

When a man has given his best and has touched the epitome of his creative potential in a film that is counted among his best works, it becomes difficult for him to live up to high expectations and surpass his own work in his subsequent ventures. This is what seems to be happening with Priyadarshan.

His Hera Pheri was a superbly made comedy and undoubtedly his best work. But his next movie Hungama and now his Hulchul are like testimonies to the elusive fact that his natural flair for making comedies is on the wane.

Twowarring families straddle the story of this movie that is set in a background providing a
On one hand is the family of authoritarian Angaarchand and his four sons who are vowed to the book of misogyny and live by the code of celibacy. On the other is the family of scheming Lakshmidevi and her three sons and a grand daughter.

What starts off as a game of revenge between the two families leads to the sowing of the first seed of love that shakes the very root of the rigid ideologies

For those who are expecting another Hera Pheri or even another Hungama , sorry, this is not as funny. Neither is it consistent funny or original funny or brilliant funny.

Basically, Hulchul is a sorta-funny movie - though the funny starts half-way through the first half (err) and suddenly stops at the interval. Then the movie becomes a drama till the climax where it again becomes supposedly-funny (phew).

If you didn't understand the funny business above, here's the explanation for the convolution.

The movie opens with some rather not-funny-at-all situations. There's the board on Angaarchand's (Amrish Puri) house declaring "Women-kind are not allowed inside" (Funny? Shrug). Or the subsequent events that lead to Kishan (Paresh Rawal) - the most docile of Angaarchand's four sons - slapping a woman who hardly looks a woman and utters some inane stuff like, "You unmarried bulls" and blah. read full review...
